Description

We are so lucky to have this rare collector's item to share with you! The origin of this genuine Dogon granary door is unknown, but the history is fascinating. An ethnic group living in the central plateau region of Mali, the Dogon people are among the oldest surviving African cultures and are best known for their ornate wooden sculptures and art. This door is yet another gorgeous example of their carving!

Traditionally, Dogon doors protected the window-like opening into each family's grain storage building, and used a simple sliding door lock. Primordial beings, ancestors, Kanaga masks, sun lizards, fertility symbols and scenes of life symbolically served to protect the entrance by making it sacrosanct. The low reliefs are hand-carved on several panels, held together by iron staples.

This 3'1" x 6'5" heavy door is perfect for a wall decoration or door covering.
