(Cowboys and Indians Style)
August 9th through 14th the Annisquam Village Players will bring one of Broadway's blockbusters to Gloucester, Annie Get Your Gun. This show, first produced in 1946, starring Ethel Merman (for whom it was written), had two major Broadway revivals, one in 1966 and one in 1999. The 1999 cast recording won a Grammy. Many famous actresses have played the role of Annie Oakley, including Mary Martin, Betty Hutton, Debbie Reynolds, Reba McEntire, Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters. Irving Berlin composed the lyrics and music, and Rodgers and Hammerstein produced the original Broadway show.
The story involves the legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her tempestuous romance with the womanizing Frank Butler. When she outshoots Frank Butler, the star of the Wild West Show, she is invited to join the show. Frank falls in love with her, but she shows him up again in a dazzling competition as he is about to propose, and he leaves both her and the show. After touring the world, Annie returns to try to join forces with Frank, and the climatic ending is a dueling match between the two in "Anything You Can Do."
