The Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) was founded in 1977as a project of the Mayor's Office of the City of Baltimore to preserve the City's rapidly disappearing industrial heritage. In 1981, it incorporated as a private non-profit educational institution. In May of that year, the BMI moved into the historic Platt Oyster Cannery building (c.1870) in South Baltimore. The Museum launched its first capital campaign in 1989 towards the renovation of the facility to enhance its appearance and create first-rate gallery space for its exhibits.

The mission of the Baltimore Museum of Industry is to collect, preserve, and interpret the industrial and technological heritage of the Baltimore region for the public, by presenting educational programs and exhibits that explore the stories of Maryland's industries and the people who created and worked in them.
