Description
FUND A NEED: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
I’m sure you’ve seen and heard about the fine work our teachers are doing. Whether it’s rich student dialogue about Vergil’s Aeneid, building a Rube Goldberg project in 8th grade to illustrate the laws of physics or recreating the undersea world in a pre-k classroom, our students are engaged and growing as learners and thinkers.
What may not be as evident to you is Friends Select’s commitment to professional development and the ways our teachers are engaged as growing learners and thinkers. Our faculty and staff participate in individual professional development in ways that are intentionally designed to enhance what they bring to their classrooms everyday. The school’s budget this year reflects nearly $40,000 to support this effort.
National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) annual conferences are exceptional professional opportunities and vehicles for growth for teachers. It is often a plane trip away so we cannot afford to send more than one or two teachers each year. Headlining speakers at these conferences have included industry leaders such as, Bill Gates, Wendy Mogel, Amy Chua, Ken Robinson, Daniel Pink, Sal Khan, Malcom Gladwell and more.
Next year, we have the unique opportunity to send EVERY FSS TEACHER to the NAIS annual conference which will be held in Philadelphia. And to do this we need your help in the form of financial support to fund registration fees up to $14,000 for over 70 teachers. Please help us take advantage of this engaging opportunity for professional growth.
Thank you for your support,
Terry Kessel
Director of Middle School, Assistant Head of School for Professional Development
Cost: $170 per teacher nearly $14,000 for all FSS teachers
Value: PRICELESS

Revolutionary Traditions: Think Big, Think Great
Truly outstanding schools thrive because they evolve to challenge, inspire, and prepare students for an open-ended future. Independent education sits at the center of a strong, sustainable future for our country because of our schools' adaptability to changing circumstances and environments. Steeped in tradition but not bound by it, our schools have grown into unique communities leveraging the core values of the past while upending the status quo to embrace revolutionary ideas. Let's celebrate the strength and resilience of our schools for weathering recent storms with grace and continued forward motion.
Celebrate our rich history, cutting-edge ideas, and the 50th anniversary of NAIS with more than 4,000 independent school leaders and colleagues at the 2013 NAIS Annual Conference in Philadelphia. The freedom to think creatively and learn in new ways liberates our students to flourish as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow. Together we'll reflect on our past success and discover a new future for education, in the city whose Liberty Bell inspires us with the strength freedom gives us to lead the way.
