Description
These bird houses are made of pine or fir, wood taken from old building rafters or joists, or the tail ends of wood from new construction. The wood is glued together to provide the thickness required for the radius of the roofs, and rough cut on a band saw. The roof is then shaped using planes, files and lots of sanding to shape the edges and provide a smooth surface for painting or staining. The clear finishes take more care and more time, and two coats of a clear are rubbed smooth and finished with wax. The rings at the entrance are made by cutting rings in wood with two sizes of hole saws; a number of these are cut on a thick piece of wood which is then sliced on edge end to end with a band saw so that the rings are cut free, like so many small wood doughnuts. These are filed and sanded by hand and shaped to fit the front of the bird house when curved, like the sides.
