Although it's a form of printing, monotyping produces a unique picture. Unlike a monoprint - which has an image engraved or raised on a plate - there is no image cut into a monotype plate. Instead, the color is drawn on the plate, which is smooth and nonabsorbent, then transferred to the paper.
