100 Anniversary of California
Women Voting In 1911
California became only the 6th state in the United States where women could vote; nine years before the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
100 years ago, California women and supportive men created an innovative and strategic campaign to win the right to vote. Despite strong opposition, the struggle for women's political equality was waged without violence by supporters from all walks of life.
When the final vote was counted, Woman Suffrage just narrowly passed. The margin of victory was only 3,587 votes – an average of one vote in each voting precinct in the state!
Celebrate the Centennial of Woman Suffrage in California on October 10, 2011.
