French for "Fat Tuesday," Mardi Gras is a world-famous New Orleans festival attracting more than six million visitors every year. The largest and most elaborate parades take place the last five days of the carnival season, which is when you will be there!
On Sunday night, your first night in town, join in as crowds gather to watch the Bacchus parade (named for the Roman god of wine), one of the first Krewes to have celebrities appear as Kings of its parade. Past Kings of Bacchus have included William Shatner, Charlton Heston, Bob Hope, and more recently, James Gandolfini, Hulk Hogan, Val Kilmer, and 2010 Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees. Monday is known as Lundi Gras (aka “Fat Monday”) when some parade Krews arrive by boat on the Mississippi River front at the foot of Canal Street. Your last night will be Mardi Gras “Fat Tuesday”, with celebrations beginning early in the day with larger parades starting Uptown and ending at Canal Street.
Everyone should experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans at least once -- there’s a reason it’s called the “Greatest Free Show on Earth!”
