Description
The Popular History Department Elective, For-Credit and U.C. Certified! One of the most popular Head-Royce History Department electives taken by seniors during the academic year to satisfy graduation requirements is now available as a summer equivalent. Taught by Head-Royce History Department Chair Peter Reinke, this course may be taken by Head-Royce Seniors in lieu of a semester elective during the school year. During the course of an intensive three-week long class, we will look at the key theories in the field of modern psychology: psychoanalysis, behaviorism, developmental psychology, and social psychology. Readings will include primary sources by the major thinkers in these movements (Freud, Piaget, Erikson, Coles, Clark, Horney, Dewey, Maslow) and Aronson's The Social Animal. We will watch two films, Do The Right Thing and A Beautiful Mind, and explore how the themes relate to the study of psychology. While this course operates as a discussion seminar, there will be extensive "field work" opportunities as students design psychology experiments and participate in two field trips. There will also be several guest speakers, ranging from criminal psychologists to experts on various aspects of the study of psychology. DATES: June 18 -- July 6, with no program on July 4. The class will meet from 10:00AM to 2:00PM with a break for lunch. We expect a mix of students from Head-Royce and the broader community. This course is U.C. Certified.
