Class Descriptions:
Fly Fishing: Fly Fishing is a pasttime that offers relaxation and the chance to be completely immersed in nature. Simultaneously, awe-inspiring and peaceful, fly-fishing is said to restore the soul. Join us for an introduction to fly-fishing for women. We will explore a brief history of fly-fishing before jumping into the right "gear" and learning casting and knot tying. The class will conclude with an optional experiental float trip on the Hiawassee River with an experienced guide (additional cost). Rods will be provided on loan for those who need them.
Basics of Movie Making: Turn your digital pictures and videos into a masterpiece. Learn the Basics of Movie Making with iMovie and Windows Movie Maker. We will learn to edit and trim clips; add titles; music; transistions and more. GPS will provide stock pictures and video to work with, but you are encouraged to bring your own.
Fitness 101: Do you need help getting started on a fitness program or are you suffering from exercise burnout? Fitness 101 is here to help. We'll cover the cardio respiratory system and how to work it, nutrition (including the truth about carbohydrates), the importance of muscular strength and how to build it, and we'll share ideas to help you stay motivated and excited about maintaining an exercise program.
Leaving a Legacy: For anyone who has ever loved another person, Leaving a Legacy will involve the creation of a legacy notebook for those loved ones; not just where to find the safe deposit key, but an articulation of your faith, your life, your regard for those who will succeed you. Using records, letters, and video recordings, you'll gather together expressions of love that are more important than material things. The background music of this class is laughter, connectedness, and preparedness, suited as much for participants twenty years old as for eighty year olds.
Chattanooga: Crossroads of the South?: President Abraham Lincoln stated, "Taking Chattanooga is as important as taking Richmond," but why? How did the young Southern city become the Crossroads of the South? As the country commemorates the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, we'll explore how Chattanooga grew to play a significant role in the event that so shaped our nation. From the first train pushing into Chattanooga to Jefferson Davis' stay in the city, we'll look at what the social and political landscape of Chattanooga was as the country moved towards war.
Working in Clay: Learn the fundamentals of Working in Clay. Areas covered will be slab building, texture techniques, and surface design possibilities. One session will be devoted to the basics of working on the wheel, and the last session will involve glazing. The goal is to enjoy working with clay in a supportive enviroment and to experience the satisfaction of having completed some handmade pieces to use!
Turning Points in Art History: Experience the Turning Points in Art History in this overview of Greek and Roman Art through the Italian Renaissance and on to Modern Art in America. After examining "the glory of man", the developement of perspective, and the blending of classical and Christian thought, we'll examine some American Art in the home(s) of Chattanooga resident art collectors.
