During the Great Depression, Fred Denver Moss was a high school student inTate,Georgia.  As a typical teenager, he was appalled at his parent’s lack of sophistication, and in particular, their use of snuff.  To avoid embarrassment when his (equally wise and sensitive) friends would drop by, he scrounged the local scrap heaps, and found an old discarded cabinet .  This he refashioned into a small, rustic piece of furniture which had a compartment with a door which was just the right size to conceal a large Luzianne Coffee can ( It was bad enough that his parents dipped snuff, let alone didn’t own a brass spittoon).  There was a compartment on one side which served as storage for a few magazines, thus helping to detract from the real purpose of  hiding the “spittoon”.

My brother, Bill Moss now proudly displays the original Snuff Box in His home in Perry, GA.  Bill has copied the piece a few times, and each one is a little different.  In Rome, GA, Jim Henderson & I have fabricated about 25 of these Snuff  Boxes over the years.  Again, each one is hand made, and each one is unique. 

All together, fewer than 40 of these boxes exist, and no two of them are exactly alike.  We hope you will use and enjoy your tribute to Depression Era Appalachian ingenuity and craftsmanship as much as we have ours.
