Description

You are bidding on history! In 1979 -- the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Seeing Eye -- a 15-cent "Seeing For Me" stamp was issued. Collected here and preserved in a beautiful frame are two "First Day" covers (envelopes), each bearing the stamp.

Each envelope is stamped "First Day of Issue" and cancelled at Morristown, N.J. on the first day the stamp was issued, June 15, 1979. The covers are mounted in a  chocolate colored frame measuring approximately 18" wide x 8" tall. The covers are mounted on a black background, each surrounded by a chocolate frame. Both are then surrounded by white matting in a chocolate frame.

The stamp on each cover was designed by illustrator Joseph Csatari.  The stamp depicts a Seeing Eye graduate from the waist down confidently walking with a German shepherd guide dog in harness. The top of the stamp reads "USA 15c", and across the bottom, "Seeing For Me".

The cover on the left shows an image of Buddy and an image of Dorothy Harrison Eustis. It reads, “Dorothy Harrison Eustis, Founder of “The Seeing Eye, Inc.” The bottom of the cover reads, “50th Anniversary, The Seeing Eye, Guide Dogs for the Blind, 1929 – 1979”.

The cover on the right shows an image of Buddy I and the following text: “Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Seeing Eye Dogs, 1929 – 1979, Buddy I, First Lady of The Seeing Eye, “As surely as those pioneers who discovered lands and ideas for the world, ‘Buddy I’ rediscovered the world for blind people.” Morris Frank. Official First Day Cover, Authorized by The Seeing Eye, Inc. and The Jockey Hollow Stamp Club, Morristown, N.J.” It also has an additional stamp that reads, “The Seeing Eye Fiftieth Anniversary” with a silhouette of a person walking with a dog.
