Description
Larry Turley started his winery in 1993 and his Zinfandels quickly reached cult status. While his sister Helen is no longer the wine maker, Turleys wines have not lost their following and they are still hard to come by and a treasure to have. In late 2004, the Wine Enthusiast stated the Turley wines are every bit as good under winemaker Ehren Jordan who came aboard in 1994 and in 2010 Parker again praised Jordan stating Turley and his sidekick longtime winemaker Ehren Jordan remain the reference point, along with Mike Officer at Carlisle in Sonoma and the Biale Family in Napa, for world-class, quintessential old vine Zinfandels. Old vines are the key to Turley's success. Their grapes can make wines with remarkable intensity and layered concentration. They also often have distinctive mineral character and lively acidity, which keep flavors focused even at advanced ripeness. Parker called the 2009 a softer, lighter-styled vintage for Turley but already charming and irresistible. He gave the Rattlesnake Ridge 92-94 points, a high rating echoed by Wine Spectator also at 92 points. Tasting notes describe the Rattlesnake as Powerfully built and appealingly rustic, with wild berry and loamy white pepper aromas. The flavors are concentrated and ripe, but focused, showing smoky plum, anise and toasty sage. The tannins are big but balanced and notes of blueberries, blackberries and damp, mossy, forest floor scents. The wine possesses fabulous fruit, admirable ripeness and a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel and plenty of power as well as fruit. This case is a great opportunity to have and to hold a Turley touchstone!
