Known to most as the mastermind behind Wells Fargo's transformation into the nation's biggest bank network (Wells Fargo is ranked #1 in the world with the highest stock valuation among all banks and financial institutions not owned by governments), Kovacevich is widely credited with inventing the modern style of retail banking. Innovative and iconoclastic, he was once overheard saying, "If you look at most financial institutions, they're always chasing today's environment, where in fact that should probably be a signal to do the opposite."
