Donated by Back of Beyond Books, a little independent bookstore with a big selection of books in Moab, Utah. The name of the store was drawn from one of Edward Abbey's most well-known books, The Monkey Wrench Gang. His character Seldom Seen Smith was an outfitter, and the name of his company--and hideout--was "Back of Beyond." We specialize in natural history, environmental literature, southwestern guidebooks & maps, Native American books, and Western history. But we also carry a wild assortment of science, philosophy, current affairs, rare books, and generally other cool stuff you won't find elsewhere.

We are constantly adding to our collection of rare books. Our store boasts three rare bookcases—one devoted to Edward Abbey's titles, one with general rare books, and one with a varying motif, such as works set in Moab or those with a uranium theme. Most of our rare books are first editions, and many are signed. You can shop online or come into the store to browse.

Planning to tour Moab and you want a guidebook written by a local author? We have lots to choose from. Looking for a mystery set in the Southwest? No problem; we have plenty. Want to read up on issues such as land use, mining, and water conservation? We have your book. Thinking of growing a water-wise garden?
