The experience of browsing for fragrance at The Avery Perfumes, the London scent emporium that just opened its latest outpost at the Limelight Marketplace in Chelsea, is a strange and mysterious one. Stocked with unusual tinctures and rare elixirs, this Victorian-esque boutique was actually designed with ornithology on the brain—a theme that’s carried through to even the smallest details: Perfumes are displayed alongside vintage birdcages, and shoppers can sample scents by misting them onto feathers, rather than paper strips. Even the name Avery is a play on the word aviary (clever). And then there are those birdcalls heard overhead. For now, that musical soundtrack is a London-location phenomenon only, but it’s reportedly in the works for NYC as well. The W. 20th Street atelier already boasts fragrance tailors to help clients navigate the array of exotic aromas—including personal and home fragrances from Carthusia, a brand whose formulas originated in the monastery of St. Giacomo in Capri, circa 1380; handcrafted men’s cologne by Boellis; Profumi del Forte artisanal blends; and cult collectibles by Esteban. The selection will change seasonally when guest perfumers come in and curate the shelves with new and rare finds. Scent enthusiasts may want to plan a winged migration stat.
