Description

The MET. Oil on canvas, 24" x 36". Framed. By Barbara W. DiLorenzo. 2011.

Plain air painting of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This painting was done in 2011, in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was a blustery day - note the American Flag flapping in the distance. A huge crowd lined up to see the exhibit on fashion designers. Although I started painting early in the morning without the pretzel cart in the composition, there was no getting around it once it was set up. Part of painting on location is adapting to the changes in people, light, and elements that come in or go out of a picture. Inadvertently I had set up my easel next to the school bus drop off, so every 20 minutes or so a busload of kids surrounded me and asked what I was doing. It was a little nerve-wracking, but the kids were all curious and respectful. It was a really terrific experience to paint outside the Met, and I look forward to doing so again.
