The daily newspaper makes wonderful material for collage. It marks the present in its full range of events – the catastrophic is mashed up against the inanely trivial – even as it slides instantly into the past.  It’s disposable, instantly obsolete, and for me that makes it irresistible as material in my effort to create something enduring, something that engages with the present but evokes a distant past and is sturdy enough to nudge into the future. 

I use the Wall Street Journal.  Its unapologetic obsession with money makes it the perfect metaphor for these times and this country.  And its ink doesn’t run when it gets wet.
