Artist's comments on the piece:
Every year I take a trip to discover a new part of the world and explore its architecture. These trips provide the research for the paintings that i do in my Chicago studio for the rest of the year, and an opportunity to teach. I spent a few weeks painting barns and Shrimp boats on the coast of Maine in 2010 and 2011 near the home of Andrew Wyeth, my favourite American Artist.
Mat Barber Kennedy was born into a family of architects in 1962, Mat developed an appreciation and passion for buildings at an early age. After graduating from the University of Sheffield and the Royal College of Art in 1988, he began a short career as a licensed architect in London. Since 1990, Kennedy has been exploring architecture and culture through painting.
Mat Barber Kennedy has spent the past twenty years looking at architecture around the world. His paintings celebrate the ordinary lives of ordinary people and the passing of time. They are a moment of recognition and applause for the everyday and the banal in a culture obsessed with latest and the greatest. Examining the architecture from countries as diverse as India, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, France, and the U.S., he seeks to reveal the unique spirit of a place.
In 1994, Kennedy was elected to Britain’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, which represents the best of contemporary British watercolors. His work is exhibited in galleries in England and the United States. In 2006 he opened MBK Studios, which includes a gallery space and studios for several artists. He has taught at Universities and secondary schools in the Chicago area, where he has lived since 1995. Currently, he teaches at the American Academy of Art and leads workshops in Chicago and abroad.
Mat Barber Kennedy lives with his wife, three young sons, and a pet tadpole. He continues traveling extensively to draw and paint unique structures around the world.
