Description
Long time donor and good friend of Rhode Island PBS, “Art & Soul” gifts, has donated this beautifully crafted “Iron Fairies” collection.
Iron Fairies are beautiful cast iron sculptures by Australian artist Ashley Sutton. This eccentric character once worked deep in the mines of Northwestern Australia. It was a life of back-breaking labor in difficult conditions.
"I longed to escape the monotony, tedium and gloom," he recounts. "So I created this fairy tale in my mind to help set my spirit free."
Included in this set is a copy of an open edition hard cover book "The Iron Fairies: Volume 1". The book measures 6”x 8” and includes 30 pages of art and text. Also included are three of the fairies: Alana, Mouna and Scarlet.
Alana
Fairy of the Sour Grass
Open Edition Iron Sculpture
Sculpture Size: 4 in.
Alana, I am called
in the garden I roam though
the sour grass, my home
the colors make all my senses soar
soft yellows and tranquil greens
swaying stems rolling like a wave
all around me
my ocean cave
blue skies and yellow towers
I look up to my bedroom flowers
Mouna
Fairy of the Wind, Storm and Rain
Open Edition Iron Sculpture
Sculpture Size: 4 in.
The Fearless, Independent Fairy
You can see the color in my eyes
of deep and dark storm-laden skies
the wind and rain are all designed
from moods and my amazing mind
oh so cheeky, oh so nice
I can spoil your day or give you life
my body is free, my feathers are gone
with the grace and beauty of a maiden swan
I dance in puddles all day long
Scarlet
Fairy of the Creeper
Open Edition Iron Sculpture
Sculpture Size: 2.75 in.
Fairy Scarlet I'm called
walls to roofs I climb
my home is but a ladder so fine
ivy's to creepers, whatever spreads tall
my garden playground is mine to call
morning's so cold, the winter so blue
pink and red leaves warm my view
on the ground below, and surrounding sky
step by step, I climb so high
