In this reprint of the rare 1890 edition, Forbes provides illustrated reminiscences of his two years traveling with the Army of the Potomac. In 1962, at the age of only 23, he was hired by the popular Frank Leslie's Newspaper to provide the paper with sketches of the conflict in Virginia. A keen observer, Forbes focused less on battle scenes and more on the life of the common soldier, with drawings showing hospitals, engineering feats, and languid camp life.
