Description
Please join us for the second in our Auction 2012 Buy-a-Spot Speaker Series, focusing on America's role in the world as the country heads into the presidential elections. President Obama's first three years in office have been defined by crises across the globe that have forced him to reimagine how America uses its power. From the growing confrontation with Iran to the decision to drastically scale back America's ambitions in Afghanistan to the uprisings that have seized the Arab world, President Obama or his successor will face a very different world than the one he inherited in 2009. We examine the President's big bets: His surprisingly aggressive use of American drone and cyber power in Pakistan and Iran, his decision to scale back the size of American armed forces, his pivot toward Asia in an effort to manage China's emergence. Our all-GDS panel lives, breathes and reports on these issues every day: Jeffrey Goldberg, national correspondent for The Atlantic and author ofthe acclaimed Prisoners: A Story of Friendship and Terror. Steven Mufson, staff writer at The Washington Post covering energy and other financial news. Steve served as the Post's Beijing correspondent and diplomatic correspondent, and worked for The Wall Street Journal in New York, London, and Johannesburg, and wrote Fighting Years: Black Resistance and the Struggle for a New South Africa. David Sanger, chief Washington correspondent for the New York Times, and former Tokyo Bureau Chief and White House correspondent for that paper. He is the author of the best-seller The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power, and a sequel coming out later this spring, An Age of Reckoning. Auction 2012 Buy-a-Spot Speaker Series events benefit the GDS Financial Aid Program. This event will take place on an evening at thehome of GDS parents Karen and Ethan Leder.
