De Toren Private Cellar (Stellenbosch, South Africa)

De Toren Private Cellar sits on the slopes of the Polkadraai Hills.  The vineyards are broken up into the five red Bordeaux varietals, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

DDS Driefontein Shiraz 2004 is a rich, dark color.  Huge wild nose with dark fruit, coffee, leather and hazelnut.  Smooth and silky mid palate with a berry fruit blast.  Lingering finish that returns to the nose in profile.  

It is a big wine that balances the sophistication expected from a De Toren wine, and the fruit wanted from a southern hemisphere Shiraz.
