Artist Statement

My paintings capture the essence of my experiences expressing them in a thoughtful, beautiful way. They come from the desire to share the beauty of nature that I see whether it is in my landscapes or still lifes. I’m drawn to the colors of fleeting light on the landscape in sunsets, moonlight and early morning which I try to portray with realistic color. But I will also push the color if it’s necessary to convey how I feel about the scene. I paint what excites and inspires me, color combinations, lighting effects, and contrasts in elements, painting in rich, luminous color and expressive, painterly brushwork.

Painting in a realistic manner. but influenced by the impressionists, I paint in a direct alla prima approach in response to my impressions of a scene creating paintings with a controlled spontaneity to them. As an artist, knowing how to use values, color, brushwork and composition, I am able to move beyond recording what I see and create an emotion, a mood in a painting to convey to the viewer a sense of place, time and an emotional connection through beauty. Expressing myself through my unique brushwork is an important component of my paintings  with each painting different in texture and detail depending on my mood and the scene. My goal is to create art that inspires and instills joy through the beauty of nature.
