Gabe Leonard was born in Wyoming and raised by a mountain lion and an old prospector. He spent the first half of his childhood dwelling between a patch of sagebrush and dry river bed at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. He spent the second half of his childhood wishing the internet had already been invented and staying up late to watch rated R movies on HBO free weekend previews.
In 1994 Gabe graduated from Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wy. He then attended the Columbus College of Art and Design where he graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1998.
Upon graduation Gabe moved to Los Angeles, CA to pursue his dream as a background painter for feature animation. He soon found his dream crushed by the weight of the world and promptly took a part time job at Macy's folding shirts. While working with high school kids, Gabe watched the entire animation industry moved into the digital world without him.
Realizing his expensive BFA degree wasn’t opening any doors and lacking both the interest and ability to follow his desired career path into the digital world, Gabe took his art to the streets. Literally, on the boardwalk in Venice Beach, Gabe started selling color copies of his paintings. He found the experience to not only be glamorous, but character building. But soon Gabe found that homeless people vomiting on park benches next to his art and being arrested and ticketed for violating height restrictions on his display to be over rated.
Since leaving the venue of Venice Beach Gabe has gone on to participate in many of the country's top art festivals and his work has been in gallery exhibits in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Atlantic City and San Diego. Although he no longer sells color copies made at kinko's, he does still offer prints and reproductions of his work. His art can be found in private collections all over the U.S., Europe, New Zealand, Australia and parts of China.
Gabe continues to live in Los Angeles, California where he can often be found napping while watching the Science channel (mostly on Sundays), thinking about bar-b-que chicken pizza, avoiding direct eye contact and often in his studio painting until the sun rises.
