Adlai E. Stevenson ran for President against Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956. Prior to this, he was governor of Illinois and was UN Ambassador during hte Kennedy administration. He was known for his thriftiness and had a photo taken of him (which won the Pulitzer prize in 1953) showing a hole in his shoe. Any political historian will remember the Stevenson photo and the powerful symbolism of a president who encouraged thrift. The symbol of the hole in his shoe was used for this political campaign pin.
