Biography: Cantor Shira Lissek began serving the Mount Sinai community in July 2007. She formerly served Congregation Gesher Shalom (The Jewish Community Center of Fort Lee) for three High Holidays under Cantor Paul Zim. Congregation Beth Shalom brought Shira Lissek to Kansas City to lead Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services for seven years. In Manhattan, she led services for the Steven Wise Free Synagogue and sang in the Park Avenue Synagogue Choir. She taught Bar/Bat-Mitzvah lessons and various classes for private students and Hebrew Schools including The Society for the Advancement of Judaism, The 92nd Street Y- Connect Jewish Afterschool, and The New Shul. A third generation Cantor, she learned the art of the Cantor from her father Hazzan Leon Lissek.
Shira Lissek holds a Masters Degree in vocal performance from the Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelors Degree in vocal performance from Indiana University School of Music. An accomplished opera singer and concert artist, Shira Lissek sang with the Seattle Opera as well as other regional companies specializing in Mozart and Puccini Heroins. Equally at home in Musical Theater, she sang 565 performances of the American Girl Review at the American Girl Place, New York. As a concert artist she was featured with The Klezmer Company Orchestra, fusing Klezmer and World Music and with the Gulf Coast Symphony in concerts: Broadway Blockbusters, A Tribute to Barbara Streisand, Andrew Lloyd Weber Unmasked, and A Tribute to Irving Berlin. She also sang for many Jewish Organizations, Synagogues, and events including a Centennial Anniversary of B'nai Shalom in Bristol Tennessee as the featured guest artist with Elie Wiesel.
