Description

Harbor Lights Sentinel Island, Alaska Lighthouse Replica donated by the Lighthouse Depot of Wells, Maine.

It would be more than three decades, after the 1867 purchase of Alaska, before the United States Congress would appropriate the necessary funds to build lighthouse along the vast Alaskan coastline. Rain, winds and harsh winters were to cause damage to many of the Alaskan lighthouses built in the early 1900's and Sentinel Island was not exception. In 1935, the wood tower was replaced. Built in Art-Deco style was an 11" square cylindrical concrete tower, rising from the eastern face of a square concrete two-story fog signal building. The steel and glass lantern room was moved and placed atop the new tower. The 1935 structure was built at a cost of $35,310. Limited Edition of 360. 5" x 6".
