ABOUT US

 The Friends of the Rockland Harbor Lights (FRHL) was formed originally as the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse (FRBL) in August 1999 as a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to lighthouse preservation. To date, the Friends have utilized funds raised from memberships, donations, grants, gift shop sales, events and campaigns in excess of $250,000 to restore the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse to its original glory. That goal is nearing its completion with the efforts of the all-volunteer Friends group and local or Maine-based businesses with the technical expertise for this type of restorative work, some of which have ties to the original construction of the 1902 structure.

In December of 2007, through the assistance of our parent organization, ALF, Owls Head Light came under the auspices of the Friends group. In 2010, with the efforts of ALF securing Federal funding, an $80,000 restoration project was completed that saw the repointing of the exterior and interior brickwork of the structure, refurbishing of the interior window frames, iron staircase, the deck and ladder leading to the lantern, as well as the repairing of the light tower’s stone foundation and recoating of the exterior brickwork. During the same time frame, the United States Coast Guard, owners of the structure, completed a $168,000 project that restored the lantern of the lighthouse.

In January of 2012, the name of the group was changed to Friends of Rockland Harbor Lights to more accurately reflect the dual effort of the group as restorers and keepers of Rockland Breakwater and Owls Head Lighthouses.
