Todd Graves, founder/CEO of Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, conceived of a fast food restaurant offering fried chicken fingers as its main course. The concept earned his college business plan the lowest grade. Undaunted, the young entrepreneur presented his business plan to bankers and continued receiving negative responses. The solution was for him was to raise money. Graves' journey led him to work as a boilermaker in Los Angeles oil refineries and to move to Alaska and work in the risky trade of commercial salmon fishing. With capital in hand, Graves returned to Baton Rouge, home of his alma mater LSU, got an SBA loan and at the college's entrance renovated an old building with his own hands. During the process, he found a mural on the original brick wall that inspired the Raising Cane's logo design and named the business after his yellow lab, Raising Cane.

The first restaurant opened in 1996 and stayed open until 3:30 a.m. because it was busy.
