Yellowman has an inspiring history and overcame several obstacles in life including growing up in an orphanage. Despite these hardships, he is credited for leading the way of reggae artists into the hip-hop community in America and with being one of the most influential reggae artists since Bob Marley. In 1981, Yellowman became the first dancehall artist to be signed to a major American label and soon released his first album Mister Yellowman in 1982 followed by Zungguzungguguzungguzeng in 1983. He began working with many different producers and sometimes released as many as five albums a year. Many of his hits were used in various hip-hop songs by popular artists including Sublime, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac and many others.
In 1986, Yellowman overcame yet another obstacle when he was diagnosed with jaw cancer and told he only had six months to live. His surgery caused an extended leave of absence from the music industry, but Yellowman beat the cancer made his comeback with the popular albums Prayer and Blueberry Hill in 1994. Yellowman continues to share his exciting reggae dancehall music throughout the world.
