Sofia Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico in 1984 from a Cuban mother. Her artwork depicts the beautiful yet frail island environment of her native country and the economically depressed Caribbean, connecting urban street culture, female power and the naturalistic forms of the tropics. She gained recognition in Puerto Rico for large scale murals painted in abandoned buildings, barrios and indoor spaces. Maldonado received her Master’s degree from Pratt Institute in 2006 and continues to blend fine art with graffiti culture, often collaborating with organizations to work with inner city youth to paint public murals.
