Description

The Holland's Spurclip

Chase Holland of Holland's, founded in 1918, said his grandfather Chase created the Spurclip in 1936 as a way to thank his suppliers during the Great Depression, a play on the phrase "you've earned your spurs." He melted down a silver umbrella handle and wore one of the creations to a Kiwanis Club meeting.

Newspaper owner Houston Harte saw the miniature silver spur dangling on a chain from a tie clip and ordered three. He sent one to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, one to Vice President John Nance Garner, a Texan, and one to Texas Congressman Sam Rayburn, who became speaker of the House in 1940.

The shop on Beauregard continues to feature the spur in jewelry. Employees also handcraft engraved belt buckles and other items. With craftsmen on site, the store can take a customer's ideas and turn out one-of-a-kind pieces.
