J. Timothy Ammons, MD
J. Timothy Ammons, MD also treats Colorado Ophthalmology Associates patients at our Denver offices. Dr. Ammons has been performing cataract refractive eye surgery since 1992 and laser refractive eye surgery since 1996, when the first FDA-approved excimer laser arrived in Denver. He is dedicated to personally caring for patients throughout the preoperative, surgical, and postoperative experience, believing that personalized care leads to optimal outcomes. Dr. Ammons also has an active cataract, glaucoma, and general ophthalmology practice.
Dr. Ammons grew up in Denver's Parkhill neighborhood. He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude in 1979. After college, he married and took his wife, Mary, also from Denver, to England. As a Marshall scholar, he earned his Master's degree at Oxford University. He and Mary returned to Denver, where Dr. Ammons attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine and continued with his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Ammons joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates in 1993. He is a board-certified member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Appointed by the Governor, he served four years as a member of the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners, chairing panel A, before returning to dedicate himself full time to his ophthalmology practice. More recently, he has partnered with the Centura Global Health Initiatives to provide cataract surgery to needy patients in the Amazon Basin in Peru.
Amy Kelmenson, M.D.
Amy Kelmenson, M.D. is a Corneal, Refractive and External Disease Specialist. She treats Colorado Ophthalmology Associates patients at both of our Denver and Lakewood offices. She is a Denver native and was just married in August of 2012.
Dr. Kelmenson graduated from Cherry Creek High School, and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, NY with degrees in Biology and Spanish. She then completed medical school at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, graduated 2007. After serving her medical internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado, she went to Florida for her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Florida in Jacksonville. She then went on to Tufts New England Eye Center/Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston for her Corneal Fellowship in cornea, anterior segment and refractive surgery.
Since finishing her Fellowship she has joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates and is performing eye surgeries such as; complex cataract and traditional cataract surgery, corneal transplants- both full and partial thickness, refractive surgery as well as specializing in external diseases. She also treats patients with glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye syndrome, corneal infections, keratoconus, and allergic eye disease just to mention a few.
Dr. Kelmenson is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and American Medical Association. She served as the Resident Representative on Internal Review Board in 2009 and as Chief Resident of Ophthalmology in 2010 and 2011. These are just a few of her many accolades. She has also written and published several text book chapters in the areas of Allergic Eye Disease and Corneal Dystrophies, in addition to multiple publications in peer reviewed ophthalmology journals.
Outside of her rewarding profession Dr. Kelmenson enjoys skiing, hiking, playing soccer, running, traveling, bicycling.

Robert Keyser, MD
Robert Keyser, MD treats Colorado Ophthalmology Associates patients at both our Denver and Lakewood offices. Dr. Keyser currently lives in Denver with his wife Yvette. He has three grown children, Rob, Scott, and Jennifer and two grandchildren, Ben and Emma.
Dr. Keyser graduated from high school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He attended undergraduate studies at Kalamazoo College, graduating in 1964. He completed medical school at the University of Michigan in 1968. Following medical school, he did a rotating internship at the University of Washington, Harborview Hospital.
After two-and-a-half years of service in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon, he moved to Colorado where he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Keyser was Head fellow and trained in ophthalmic pathology from 1975 to 1976 at the CU Health Sciences Center. Dr. Keyser joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates the following year. He excels in refractive surgery, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and retinal laser surgery. He has been board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1976 and is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he teaches residents on a weekly basis.
Dr. Keyser is a member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Denver Medical Society.
Dr. Keyser has been performing cataract refractive eye surgery since 1974 and started performing PRK and LASIK eye surgery in 1996, when the procedures were first approved in the United States. He was one of the founding physicians of the Clear Vision Laser Centers in the Denver metropolitan area.
Outside of his rewarding profession as an eye doctor, Dr. Keyser enjoys golf, travel, and biking.
James Melzer, OD
James Melzer, OD treats Colorado Ophthalmology Associates patients at both our Denver and Lakewood offices. Dr. Melzer is a second-generation Colorado native. After completing his undergraduate studies at Colorado State University, he pursued graduate studies at the University of North Dakota and Washington State University. Following three years of post-doctoral research on the effects of radiation on genetic material, Dr. Melzer moved his family to Buffalo, New York to teach biology and genetics at Canisius College. After five years of teaching, Dr. Melzer returned to school at the Michigan College of Optometry, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1999.
Dr. Melzer joined Colorado Ophthalmology Associates in 1999. He specializes in contact lens fitting as well as primary eye care. Specialty contact lens fitting for people with keratoconus (irregular corneas) or post-surgery defects is one of Dr. Melzer's favorite and most rewarding jobs. In addition to this, Dr. Melzer works extensively with patients who suffer from dry eye syndrome.
Dr. Melzer lives in Littleton with his wife and two children, and is very glad to be back in Colorado. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, skiing, biking, and gardening.
James Patterson, MD
James Patterson, MD treats Colorado Ophthalmology Associates patients at both of our Denver and Lakewood offices. Dr. Patterson is a Denver native, and the son of a former Denver urologist. He has two sons, Colin and Cameron.
Dr. Patterson graduated from Cherry Creek High School, and spent one year living in Norway as an American Field Service foreign exchange student. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1976, and then completed medical school at the University of Colorado in 1981. After serving his medical internship year in Christchurch, New Zealand, he returned to the University of Colorado for his residency in ophthalmology.
Since finishing his residency, Dr. Patterson has been in practice with Colorado Ophthalmology Associates, excelling in eye surgeries such as; refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and glaucoma surgery. Dr. Patterson has been performing refractive surgery since 1987, and started performing PRK and LASIK surgery in 1996, when they were first approved in the United States. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Patterson was one of the founding physicians of the Clear Vision Laser Centers in the Denver metropolitan area. He is also a member and past president of the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and is a fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons.
