Description
Bid now for this framed print, Memory of Capernaum, by Lila Wahrhaftig donated by Dayenu.
Inspired by Motifs Synagogue at Capernaum in Israel, this is a beautiful and spiritual piece of art.
Lila Wahrhaftig earned her Bachelor in Fine Arts at Holy Names College in Oakland, California. There she studied intaglio printmaking and Hebrew. In 1985 she began her study of papermaking and incorporated papermaking into her repertoire of skills. Her work has been shown all over the globe, including exhibitions at the Barbicon Gallery, London m England; the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum, Tokyo,Japan; and in numerous museums and galleries in the United States.
Ms. Wahrhaftig says about her work, the underlying inspiration for my prints and paper pieces is the duality of Judaism and nature. Having gained my knowledge of Jewish ritual painfully and fairly late in life, it is doubly precious to me. This knowledge colors most of my work, from a view of what is mans (or womans) relationship to God, to what that relationship is to nature.
My husband, our three children, and I have taken many camping trips throughout the west. Jack and I have also camped in the Sinai Dessert where we saw ancient rock petroglyphs, dating back to the time of the Exodus. I recently spent almost a month in Baja California, exploring the mysterious and striking rock paintings of that remote area. The Torah, the beauty of Hebrew letters, the rock painting and graffiti of the desert, the by-ways of Jerusalem, are all part of the inspiration for my abstract Judaica. I like to leave a sense of the unsaid, a sense of mystery for onlookers to fill in themselves. The most interesting art show something new with each viewing.
Ms. Wahrhaftig is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.
