Ellen got hooked on photography the day she got a Kodak Instamatic with the big blue flashcubes. "I captured friends, family, kittens, cars, mailmen, lawnmowers… anything that passed by my suburban Chicago street. Since I was just 7, and a little shy about asking anyone to pose, “spontaneity” became my style."

Today the Instamatic is gone, but Ellen still shoots film. While this requires more steps from “shot” to “print,” it lets her create magic in the darkroom with a depth and chromatic range digital photography won’t allow.
