About 18 years ago, artist John Dugdale experienced a huge life-altering stroke, causing him to lose 80 percent of his vision. Yet somehow, this event did not end Dugdale’s successful photographic career. His loss of vision forced him to see in a different way. “I now know that the eyes are merely instruments - the most splendid secrets of vision dwell in the heart and mind. This process has endeared me to a world of sense, quietude, and beauty that I was never able to fully journey through in my previous career as a commercial photographer.”

Dugdale works with 19th century photography techniques like large format cameras, cyanotype prints, and albumen processes (the dominant photographic process from the 1850s through the 1880s). Dugdale has always approached photography with a 19th century sensibility; his world is one of poetics and spirit. His images concern the transcendence of time and place.
