A Journey from the Chain Bridge to the Golden Gate, by Agnes Biro Rothblatt, chronicles the author's true story of surviving the Nazi regime. Smuggled out of Hungary with her sister, Rothblatt left behind a childhood of mortal fear began creating a new life in the United States.
From Neighborhood to Manhood, by the Boys of Blue Hill Avenue, edited by Arthur Bloom, is a series of short memoirs by boys growing up Jewish in Roxbury and Dorchester, MA, in the 1940s and 50s. The stories look at themes of their common origins in Boston -- the drives and ambitions of first- and second-generation immigrant offspring; the role of education in the making of these men; and, especially, the Haym Salmon Chapter of B'nai B'rith AZA that brought them together in ther first place -- and provided an everlasting glue.
Goldie's Story, a slightly fictionalized memoir by Miriam Kelemen Solis, describes a young Hungarian girls' struggle growing up in the midst of the Holocaust. Her story, based on the author's real-life experiences, recounts her heroic attempts to survive against the harshest of odds, including famine, illness, bombs, divorce, prejudice, and hatred, all the while longing for a peaceful life.
