Description

Set of 12 note cards and envelopes, featuring original artwork by Phoenix School students.

In 1994 Phoenix kids made these note cards to send to Senator Kennedy to explain why it was so important to build a replica of the Friendship to help schoolchildren understand the maritime history of Salem. When Senator Kennedy shared them with Senator Byrd, they helped to convince him to recommend funding of the project. Senator Kennedy kept these cards in the bottom drawer of his desk for many years, often mentioning them in his speeches.

Phoenix kids often use note card drawings to communicate the information they have learned. By combining scientific drawings with artistic colors, they learn to build a composition with a main focus and a background that communicates relevant information or they work with negative space, adding smaller details to create a more textured background.
