Description
Mayor Richard M. Daley is the longest-serving Chicago Mayor with 22 years in office, first elected in 1989. During his term of service, Mayor Daley took over the Chicago Public Schools, developed tourism, advocated for gun control, increased environmental efforts and the rapid development of the North, South and West sides of the City. He was a national leader in the privatization of public assets to private corporations through sale or lease. The Mayor also focused on rebuilding Chicago as a destination city as opposed to a manufacturing base. He oversaw the creation of Millennium Park, and spearheaded the conversion of Navy Pier into a popular tourist destination. He openly supported immigration reform, and green building initiatives, for which he was presented with an Honor Award from the National Building Museum in 2009 as a "visionary in sustainability."
Mask designed by Marilyn Dale
"Born and bred in Chicago for two decades. I am a certificate holder from the school of Art Institute. To me the only mayor there could be for Chicago had to be named Daley. This mask, signed by Richard M., is designed on Chicago's flag. The stars depict only four of "da mayor's" accomplishments, accented by the city's beautiful skyline!"
