Mask Designed by Lisa Bick

Due to a shared love for music between Sir Andrew Davis, and artist Lisa Bick, she chose a score written for the violin by Beethoven's hand. She printed the score on a thin piece of silk and wrapped the mask with it. She found it lovely when the hot beeswax encompassed it but she wanted to use an iridescent bronze wax in lines to imitate the slurs drawn into the music and suggest a note around the signature. The mask is also hand rubbed with a pigment stick of the color of night and marked with a cross of batons. Encaustic is done on flat panel, traditionally, so manipulating the wax into curves is a bit problematical.

As an encaustic artist, Lisa Bick typically employs various mixed mediums into her work which is always highly personal and tends to depict not only layers and mysteries of wax but her own. She is entranced by what is between the layers, hidden beneath the layers and what is given to the viewer to interpret. The mystery of art and life drives her to continue her explorations into the process of encaustic painting and creative practice.
