Description
Clay print by artist Rachel Tirosh.
Clay printing is a new monotype technique, with clay for "ink", and hand tools instead of a press machine. This technique was invented by Mitch Lyons (http://www.mitchlyons.com/about.html).
Clay printing involves a slab of stoneware clay which is rolled flat and allowed to become leather-hard. China clay slip, mixed with pure pigments, is brushed on, dried and rolled into the clay slab, one color over another, building the design with layers of images. Using a rolling pin, and other hand tools to apply pressure, the image is transferred from the slab to specialized canvas. The top layer of clay is removed with each 'pull', so every print is unique. China clay is inert, and the pigments are permanent, thus the print should maintain its beauty and integrity for years to come.
