Description
Are you raising the next brilliant mind interested in medicine? Here is a rare chance for them to see "behind the scenes" happenings of the neurosurgeons at Washington University School of Medicine!!! During this 2 hour tour, your future neurosurgeon and one of his/her friends will get to put on scrubs and view our intra-operative operating room with Reed dad and Neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Chicoine. This is an operative suite where patients are able to get a MRI during their surgical procedures, and is one of the only rooms like it in the country. They will get to view a Gamma Knife machine in Radiation Oncology which is a knifeless machine that delivers targeted radiation to treat brain abnormalities. The kids are invited to visit two labs. One to view the research of another Reed dad, Neurosurgeon Dr. Albert Kim. Then we will take them to the lab of Neurosurgeon Dr. Eric Leuthardt who is researching brain-computer interfacing, in hopes to help paralyzed patients move artificial limbs and restore neurological function. The little doctors will get to play a video game invented by Dr. Leuthardt, using no hands but by controling it entirely with brain power.
We will finish this spectacular day by having lunch at the top of the hospital in Queeny Tower Restaurant overlooking beautiful Forest Park. The winner will also receive a Washington University School of Medicine T-shirt. The attendee must be 8 to 12 years old, and may choose 1 friend (also aged 8-12) to come along. Mutually agreeable day during summer 2013.
