History of Tanque Verde Ranch

The rich and colorful history of this Arizona dude ranch begins with the Pima Indians.  The "Tanque Verde" Ranch is named for the "green pool" and seasonal river that the Indians used as a source of water.  They left behind numerous mortar stones and other artifacts as testimony to their passage.

In 1868 the land surrounding the tanks was purchased by Emilio Carrillo, a Mexican hacendado (the owner of a large estate) from Santa Cruz.  After Carrillo's death in 1908, Jim Converse owned the ranch and began inviting eastern dudes to participate in everyday ranch activities.  He further extended the business in both the production of cattle and the involvement of tourists until 1955.

In 1957, Brownie Cote purchased the property.  He expanded on the existing operation and developed the property into a successful combination of classic western dude ranch and world class resort.  In turn, he began a legacy of quality and unforgettable experiences that the Cote family continues to maintain still today.

All Inclusive Ranch Rates

A true ranch vacation experience, starting with amazing accommodations with mountain and desert views of the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains, at the edge of Coronado National Forest.  Casitas and haciendas feature plenty of space, patios and wood-burning fireplaces.  Ranch Rates include three hearty meals each day, including scheduled breakfast rides Thursday and Sunday (unforgettable, with blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs cooked over a mesquite fire high in the mountains) and BBQ cookout dinners Wednesday and Saturday (with live entertainment and all the fixin’s), all standard horseback walking and loping trail rides and lessons, mountain biking, fishing, guided hiking, nature center activities, yoga and wellness activities, arts and craft activities, indoor and outdoor pools, and tennis. You’ll finish your days so tuckered out that you won’t even notice that Tanque Verde Guest Ranch rooms and suites don’t have televisions, and that your kids will be too busy talking to you about their experiences to notice either, but our Ranch Rates do include wireless internet, satellite radio, and an array of evening events and entertainment to make this a vacation you’ll remember for a lifetime.
