I was visiting my friends in Berkeley this summer, and during the week that I was there, I literally went to Gioia's everyday, taking a different friend each time. It's in a quiet little neighborhood about a 10 minute drive northwest of campus. If you're a student at Cal and without a car, find a way to get there 'cause it's definitely worth it.

In the course of my week of daily visits, I had the Pomodoro (tomatoes and basil), the Salsiccia (sausage and pecorino), the Zucchini Pesto (with mozzarella and ricotta), the Funghi (shrooms), the Acciughe (anchovies), and the Pepperoni (pepperoni ;). Their crust strikes a sublime balance between crispiness and chewiness, and all the ingredients are simple, fresh, and of excellent quality -- the way Italian food should be. Though all the pizzas were stellar, the Pomodoro stood out as my favorite, despite my usual carnivorous preference.

Their pizza by the slice is already baked and in a display window for you to choose, but they're all pretty fresh out the oven because the slices sell very quickly. They're putting in new pizzas constantly. Also, they bake your slice for about 5 minutes in the oven after you order it, so it's pretty much indistinguishable from a pizza that was baked freshly and served immediately -- even to the most discerning palate, imo.
