Description

Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) From Traites des Arbes des Arubustes... by Pierre-Joesph Redouté (1759-1840) and Pancrace Bessa (1772-1835) Paris: 1800-1819.

Hand-colored stipple engravings (16.5" x 10" Paper Size)

The leading botanical artists of their time, Pierre-Joseph Redouté and Pancrace Bessa, created this volume as homage to the early botanical scholar and artist Louis Duhamel du Monceau. Duhamel du Monceau was a horticulturist of the 18th century, and among the most important French writers on fruit, plant physiology and agriculture. These delicate, hand-colored stipple engravings by Redouté and Bessa illustrate flowering plants. The use of the stipple engraving technique along with the detailed coloring makes these engravings distinctive of Redouté's work.
