Description
Fund-A-Need for Grant-A-Wish - Biology Study Incentive.
Biology worksheets have been created which can earn students who have academic support or Student Learning Center extra credit in their Biology classes. To motivate them to complete these sheets and to do them carefully, Cathy Waldman is sponsoring a contest in which all 9th and 10th graders in Biology can have one entry into a raffle for a $150 Apple gift card per worksheet completed with 80% or more. Ms. Waldman grades the worksheets and give feedback to the students through their Student Learning Center folders or through their Academic Support instructors.
Cathy Walderman is sponsoring the contest this year and applying for $300 so that two Apple Gift cards can be purchased for next year and have two contests: one for the first semester and one for the second. $150 was chosen because it is the equivalent cost of a Nano iPod. The gift cards would be a better prize since students who already have Apple iPhones or iPods can buy iTunes or apps.
The purpose is to motivate the kids who struggle with academics (especially those on IEPs or 504s) to do more comprehensive work with the vocabulary they get. The worksheets created require students to not only match the definition to the term but match paraphrased definitions and underline the important words in the definitions. These tasks should help them better see the differences and similarities between definitions and increase the depth of their thinking about the definitions. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, these worksheets were designed to take advantage of evidence-based research regarding the improvement of vocabulary comprehension.
Eventually Ms. Waldman would like to extend the contest to all grade levels, perhaps with other science vocabulary or concentrating on important academic vocabulary (called Tier II words) or even SAT words. Right now the focus is on Biology land II because these worksheets have been created. Students also receive extra credit for these worksheets in their Biology class (if they have completed all their work).
2 gift cards for $300 total. You may donate in increments of $10. Example: to donate $50, purchase 5 of this item.
