Summer Reading Rewards

The “summer slide” phenomenon is well documented.  Students experience regression of their reading and academic skills during the summer.  Summer Reading programs have been developed to maintain and bolster reading skills. 

Our current Minuteman Summer Reading offers kids a vast array of titles to choose from.  More importantly, the list includes selections appropriate for struggling readers and advanced readers.  No matter what the student’s skill base, we want to encourage kids to read more than one book over the summer.

To increase excitement about reading and to recognize outstanding productivity, Minuteman rewards top performing students with certificates of achievement, and when possible, gift cards to Barnes and Noble bookstore. 

Top performance is determined by two factors.  First a student must pass a 30 question multiple choice test with at least a 70% to earn “credit” for reading a book.  Second, the total amount of words read from each credited book is added for a total amount of words.  We want to recognize the students with the 5 highest word totals in each class.  We want each student to receive a $20 gift card from Barnes and Noble, but a partial amount will suffice if necessary.

20 Barnes and Noble gift cards x $20 = $400 total request.

It is important to note, complexity of text is not a factor, thus allowing all reading ability levels the chance to earn a reward.
