Description

Fund-A-Need for Grant-A-Wish - Math/Nature and Gardening.

This grant is to obtain seed starting materials for a math class to have hands on work with seed and food production.  Activities will include: propagating seeds, determining germination percentages, rate of growth and caring for vegetables.

Outcomes will include a more robust understanding of percentages, rates of change, and hopefully an appreciation of food production, as spinach and lettuce cuttings will be available to sample during the school year and lettuce and tomato seedlings will be made available to students to take home at the end of the school year.

Thomas Szekely would also like to join in the Cornell Lab Project Feeder Watch by buying a bird feeder and a supply of seed to place outside our classroom window.  The goal being to increase our student's awareness of the natural world and to practice data collection and representing data in different ways such box and whiskers, graphs, histograms, and stem and leaf graphs.  Student data will be added to data collected from many other bird feeders across the nation and incorporated into national research.
