Description

This handmade walking stick is being made by former Governor of the Pueblo of Zia and current tribal administrator of the pueblo, Peter Pino. It is a yucca stalk with wood burning, pigment, glitter and a crown of feathers. Walk in style and with better balance with this walking stick which is as beautiful as it is useful.

Former Governor Pino has been a Tribal Council member since 1967. Since 1977, he has served as the tribal administrator and treasurer. Pino is a traditional spiritual leader, holding a lifetime appointment as the tribe's Keeper of Songs. He is also a traditional craftsman who tans deer hides and makes moccasins, bows, arrows, digging sticks, rabbit sticks, and bone tools, using the same techniques employed by his Puebloan ancestors. His archaeological interests have led him to studies and board commitments with Crow Canyon and Mesa Verde, and consultant work for Mesa Verde National Park. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Mesa Verde Foundation since 1966, and was vice chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the State of New Mexico, Office of Indian Affairs. He is the first Native American to serve as a Commissioner for the New Mexico Game and Fish Commission, appointed by then New Mexico State Governor Bill Richardson. Pino has degrees in industrial education and electronics, including a master's degree in business administration from UNM.
